just laugh

I can't bake a cake. Nope. I can't.

I tried to bake a double layer cake for my hubby's birthday this weekend, and it was a disaster. The cake began to fall apart, the icing was going everywhere, and I just wanted to cry. My sister was laughing so hard, and I was getting angrier by the minute. I wanted to throw the cake in the trash. I was so *mad!

My sister took over and finished up the frosting, and then my hubby came home. They talked me out of throwing away the cake {I wanted to trash the disaster and run to Cheesecake Factory for plan b}. They were laughing, but I was mad. Really mad. We ate the ugly, mess-of-a-cake and it was good. It tasted nothing like it looked thankfully!

Later this past weekend, my hubby asked me why I had gotten so angry about the cake. It wasn't until he asked me, when I realized how ridiculous I acted the night I tried to bake the cake. I always want things to be perfect. I want to be perfect. But, that's a ridiculous goal to have.

I work part-time, and I feel like my house is never as clean as Susy Q's house. She's a stay-at-home mom who always has a clean house, the best food {she can bake a cake!}, the prettiest hair, and the most well behaved kids. Do you know Susy Q?

Well, I'm not Susy Q, and that's ok. I'm a working momma, who goes to work Monday-Friday from 8am-1pm, who sometimes has the messiest house on the block, doesn't wash her hair every day {thank goodness for dry-shampoo}, and orders a pizza for those days when work is stressing her out.

I'm not perfect, and I'm trying to let go of that. It's ok. I made a really ugly, terribly messy, ridiculous looking cake. And we ate almost the whole thing. I just need to laugh about those days.

  1. I love this post!!! Totally WHY i like you!!! YOU ARE REAL!!! I actually dumped a whole dinner down the garbage disposal once after my husband and I were first married because I a couple of the ingredients and therefore "it was going to be terrible!!!" It totally would have been fine but at the time I couldn't take anything like that!!!! Perfection is an IMPOSSIBLE thing! I keep on trying for it sometimes though and it's times like this when i remember the rest of my life is a fleeting thing and WHO the heck cares...a clean house doesn't make your kids laugh hysterically or tuck them in at night! :):)

  2. You're 100% right! We need to be able to laugh at these things- our flaws are what makes us unique and who we are! Life is too short to take things too seriously! Good message :)

  3. I was Susy Q, when all of you were young, and through the years one or more of you kids (at one time or another) hated me for being Susy Q. You guys would rather be at the house next door where the mom was more relaxed. The cake was delicious, I enjoyed 2 pieces while babysitting Caleb on Saturday. Shshshsh...don't tell Dad, he only had one piece. :)

  6. This is a great post! Refreshing to know there are other people struggling to keep up with "Suzy Q"! I think that behind closed doors, Suzy is a mess like all of us. Our imperfections (dirty house, messy hair and ugly cakes) make us perfect... Right?!

    1. I use to live in Denton! You'll need to check out Beth Marie's. It's the cutest old fashion icecream parlor in the old town square. {and there are some GREAT antique stores next door}! =)

  10. This is such a refreshing post! And I think you are PERFECTLY imperfect! I am also a total perfectionist and trying to learn to laugh and not stress about the small stuff... It's hard to "let go" but I am slowly learning I have the most fun when things aren't planned, perfect, and put together. Hugs to you, super hardworking Momma!!

  11. I am visiting from Kelly's Korner. I gave up on layered cakes last year, now everyone get sheet cakes and sometimes they are decorated right in the pan. They taste great, but I just can't get the pretty part down.
